DALLMEIER ELECTRONIC GmbH

The RET is introducing more stringent camera surveillance in the Rotterdam metro. Main contractor is the firm VCS in Waalwijk, which is specialised in camera surveillance systems. Sony is supplying a large proportion of the approximately 1000 surveillance cameras, which will come into operation at the beginning of 2002 to watch over the safety of the passengers and RET personnel at nearly 50 underground stations .
All camera images will be stored on 75 digital hard disc recorders of the type DMS 180 II from Dallmeier electronic.

In recent years, more and more passengers have felt unsafe in the Rotterdam underground. The RET, the Rotterdam public transport company, therefore intends to increase camera surveillance on the metro stations. Wendy van Hogerhuis (Emaco Consultancy) is in charge of the redesign of the metro management organisation, as it is called. “The entire outdated camera system from the early nineties has now been replaced. The final details of the central security room are now being completed.” Next year, about 1000 video cameras will act as extra eyes for the RET security personnel. All the fixed black and white cameras have now been replaced by colour cameras, which can be rotated by 360 degrees, depending on the task they are used for.

Camera plan
VCS won this major order in the European tender procedure just over a year ago. VCS promoted itself as system integrator, responsible for the installation of all camera systems, software, cabling and transmission. Besides Sony, which is supplying the extremely light-sensitive fixed cameras, there are a number of other project partners who will complement the custom work. Pelco is supplying about 70 dome cameras and the complete video matrix for the system. The AWS3000 system supplied by NKF will be responsible for the transmission over the single-mode glass fibre network. All camera images will be stored digitally on Dallmeier hard disk recorders. The cameras, fitted with sensors and therefore extra sensitive to light, will still provide good picture quality even in the dimly lit underground areas.

Wim van Deijzen, Director of VCS: “Just mounting 1000 cameras is not enough. We first made a list of the safety problems facing RET. After that, we drew up a camera plan and a programme of requirements for the supply of the surveillance equipment.”

This comprehensive camera surveillance is also intended to improve the service given by RET. A link has therefore been made to the new RET Company Reporting System. Van Hogerhuis: “The interaction between the CRS and the CCTV-system makes it unique”
